Simon Cowell is known for judging singers on shows like American Idol, The X Factor, and America’s Got Talent. The music mogul, nicknamed Mr. Nasty, certainly has a lot of opinions about other people’s talent, but can he sing himself?

Cowell hasn’t released any albums as a recording artist, but he has shown off his singing voice a few times. Talent Recap took a deep dive into some examples in an attempt to determine whether or not the judgmental Brit can actually carry a tune.
Way back in 1982, Cowell performed as a character named Wonderdog, who had a song called “Ruff Mix.” Because the actor didn’t show up, Cowell put on the suit and portrayed the singing canine. We’re pretty sure that’s not actually the music mogul barking on the track, but he showed off some nice stage presence.

In 2018, the America’s Got Talent judges got together for a little Christmas karaoke. Howie Mandel was in the middle of his own rendition of “We Wish You a Merry Christmas” when he asked Cowell to sing along with him. The grumpy judge instead wanted Mel B to sing. He accompanied her with some melodic meows into the microphone.

In 2013, Power Rangers creator Haim Saban offered to donate $1 million during a fundraiser if Cowell would sing the theme song to the franchise. Cowell obliged, singing one line and then declaring, “I’m not singing anymore!” We must say he showed off a pretty deep singing voice, although the talent is questionable.

On X Factor USA in 2012, judge Demi Lovato suggested that one of the contestants sounded like “what Simon would sound like when he would sing.” Kelly Rowland later convinced him to sing “Can’t Help Falling in Love,” with plenty of Elvis Presley flair.

In 2017, a contestant named Reuel Elijah challenged the X Factor UK judges to sing along to “This Is How We Do It” by Montell Jordan. Cowell played along with a smile on his face, quietly singing the lyrics so that he could barely be heard. But hey, at least he was game to participate.

It’s not a surprise that Cowell rarely shows off his singing voice, since he himself has admitted he doesn’t have any other talents besides his ability to judge other people. And considering he’s made an entire career out of that, who can really blame him for keeping his mouth shut?
