Last night on American Idol, Katy Perry stirred the pot to start some drama again! She speculated that Laine Hardy and Laci Kaye Booth were dating after their movie song duet, “Jackson” from Walk the Line.
But is there any truth to her speculation? Are Laine and Laci dating? Our investigation says no, but watch the performance for yourself, then we’ll get into what we know.

Laine and Laci had chemistry for sure, as you can see from this video. That’s the point of a duet though! They were playing the part and did a convincing job. Especially when you’re covering Johnny and June, you’ve got to have strong chemistry. The duet has even posted other videos of them singing together too.
While Katy is known for causing (and loving) drama, it seems this time she’s fighting a losing battle. The truth is, Laci is dating someone else! Or at least she was as of two weeks ago. Her recent Instagram post confirms that.

So it looks like this season, we won’t have another Maddie and Caleb relationship. Even though there’s a lot of speculation that Laine and Laci will be the last two standing! It would almost be too…oddly similar and perfect if it were a thing for the second season in a row.
But that hasn’t stopped people online from thinking (and hoping) they’re a couple:
